Understanding EPA Tier Standards for Diesel Generators

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates emissions from non-road diesel engines under 40 CFR Part 60. Generators sold or operated in the United States must use EPA-certified engines.

EPA Tier 4 Generator FAQ

Do I need an EPA Tier 4 Final generator for my US project?
Any new non-road diesel engine above 25 horsepower (approximately 19kW) manufactured after 2015 and sold for use in the United States must be EPA Tier 4 Final certified. This applies to portable and stationary generator sets. If you are buying a new generator for use at a US construction site, rental yard, data centre, or any other US facility, it must have a Tier 4 Final certified engine. Used or legacy Tier 3 engines may operate under grandfathering provisions but cannot be sold as new.
What is the difference between Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final?
Tier 4 Interim (T4i) was a transitional standard applied to engines from approximately 2011–2014. Tier 4 Final (T4F) is the current and most stringent standard, with significantly lower NOx limits (0.30 g/kWh vs 2.0 g/kWh for T4i). All new engines sold in the US today must meet T4F. Elitech Power supplies only T4F certified engines — we do not supply T4 Interim as these are no longer compliant for new equipment sales.
Do Yanmar and Perkins EPA generators require special fuel?
Yes. EPA Tier 4 Final engines with DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) require Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) with a maximum sulfur content of 15 parts per million (ppm). Standard ULSD diesel sold at US gas stations and truck stops meets this specification. Using higher-sulfur fuel will damage the DPF and may void the engine warranty. We supply a fuel specification sheet with every unit.
Can you supply CARB-compliant generators for California?
California’s CARB emission standards are stricter than federal EPA standards for some engine categories. We can supply CARB-compliant configurations — please specify “California operation” when requesting a quote so we can confirm the correct engine variant and documentation required.
What documentation do you provide for US customs clearance?
We supply: EPA Certificate of Conformity (COC) for the engine, engine test report, generator set test report, CE declaration of conformity, commercial invoice, packing list, and Bill of Lading. For DDP shipments we handle US customs clearance including EPA import declaration (EPA Form 3520-21) on your behalf. All documents are in English.
