What Is a High Voltage Generator Set?

Technical explanation and key advantages over standard LV generators with transformers.

A high voltage (HV) generator set produces electricity at medium voltage — typically 3.3kV, 6.3kV, 6.6kV, 10.5kV, 11kV or 13.8kV — directly from the alternator, without the need for a separate step-up transformer. Standard (LV) generators output at 400V / 480V, which must be stepped up to medium voltage if the facility distribution system or grid connection point operates at HV. By integrating the HV alternator into the generator set, the complete step-up transformer, transformer room and associated LV cabling are eliminated — reducing capital cost, space requirements and electrical losses.

LV Generator + Transformer vs Direct HV Generator

Understanding when a direct HV generator set is the better solution.

HV Generators %custom_field_Attribute 2 value(s)%Standard Approach

LV Generator (400V) + Step-Up Transformer

✅ Lower generator unit cost

✅ Standard 400V alternator — widely available

✅ Easier maintenance access

❌ Requires separate transformer (significant cost and space)

❌ Transformer losses 1–2% of output

❌ Larger footprint — transformer room required

❌ Additional point of failure

Best for: <500kVA, short cable runs, budget-constrained projects

HV Generators %custom_field_Attribute 2 value(s)%Direct HV Solution

Direct HV Generator (3.3kV–13.8kV)

✅ No step-up transformer — eliminates capital cost

✅ Lower electrical losses — typically 1–2% efficiency gain

✅ Compact footprint — no transformer room

✅ Fewer components — higher overall system reliability

✅ Long distribution cable runs without LV cable losses

❌ Higher generator unit cost

❌ HV maintenance requires qualified HV personnel

Best for: 500kVA+, long cable runs, grid-connected projects, mining power plants

HV Generator FAQ

What voltage levels are available for HV diesel generators?
Elitech Power can supply HV generator sets with the following direct output voltages: 3.3kV, 6.3kV, 6.6kV, 10.5kV and 11kV at 50Hz; and 3.3kV, 4.16kV, 6.6kV, 7.2kV and 13.8kV at 60Hz. Other voltages (such as 4.16kV or 12.47kV) are available on request. Specify your required voltage, frequency and earth system (solidly earthed, resistance earthed or isolated) when enquiring.
What protection equipment is included with an HV generator?
Standard HV generator package includes: HV VCB (vacuum circuit breaker) output cubicle, numerical protection relay (overcurrent ANSI 51, earth fault ANSI 51N, reverse power ANSI 32), neutral earthing resistor (NER) cabinet, metering CT/PT cabinet, and surge arrestors. An optional differential protection relay (ANSI 87G) is available for large units or critical applications. Full single-line diagram and protection relay settings schedule are provided with every HV generator.
Can HV generators be paralleled with the utility grid?
Yes. Elitech Power can supply HV generator sets configured for grid-parallel operation, including automatic synchronising controls, grid protection relays (ANSI 27/59 under/overvoltage, ANSI 81 under/overfrequency, ANSI 25 synchronising check) and power export metering. Grid-parallel systems require close coordination with the local utility — we provide full documentation for utility connection applications.
What is the minimum order for an HV generator set?
Minimum order is 1 unit. Due to the custom HV alternator winding and switchgear, production lead times are typically 25–40 working days. For power plant projects with 2 or more units, we offer package pricing with shared engineering and commissioning support.
