What Is a High Voltage Generator Set?
Technical explanation and key advantages over standard LV generators with transformers.
A high voltage (HV) generator set produces electricity at medium voltage — typically 3.3kV, 6.3kV, 6.6kV, 10.5kV, 11kV or 13.8kV — directly from the alternator, without the need for a separate step-up transformer. Standard (LV) generators output at 400V / 480V, which must be stepped up to medium voltage if the facility distribution system or grid connection point operates at HV. By integrating the HV alternator into the generator set, the complete step-up transformer, transformer room and associated LV cabling are eliminated — reducing capital cost, space requirements and electrical losses.

LV Generator + Transformer vs Direct HV Generator
Understanding when a direct HV generator set is the better solution.
LV Generator (400V) + Step-Up Transformer
✅ Lower generator unit cost
✅ Standard 400V alternator — widely available
✅ Easier maintenance access
❌ Requires separate transformer (significant cost and space)
❌ Transformer losses 1–2% of output
❌ Larger footprint — transformer room required
❌ Additional point of failure
Best for: <500kVA, short cable runs, budget-constrained projects
Direct HV Generator (3.3kV–13.8kV)
✅ No step-up transformer — eliminates capital cost
✅ Lower electrical losses — typically 1–2% efficiency gain
✅ Compact footprint — no transformer room
✅ Fewer components — higher overall system reliability
✅ Long distribution cable runs without LV cable losses
❌ Higher generator unit cost
❌ HV maintenance requires qualified HV personnel
Best for: 500kVA+, long cable runs, grid-connected projects, mining power plants
HV Output Voltage Selection Guide
Match HV output to your facility distribution voltage or utility grid connection point.
| HV Output | Hz | Typical Application | Common Markets |
| 3.3 kV | 50 / 60Hz | Industrial plant distribution, mining | UK, Australia, Southeast Asia |
| 6.3 kV | 50Hz | Chinese standard industrial HV | China, Africa (Chinese projects) |
| 6.6 kV | 50 / 60Hz | Industrial distribution, oil & gas | UK, Middle East, Australia |
| 10.5 kV | 50Hz | Chinese grid interface standard | China, Chinese-funded projects globally |
| 11 kV | 50Hz | Utility grid connection, substations | UK, Africa, South Asia, Australia |
| 13.8 kV | 60Hz | North American / Caribbean utility standard | USA, Canada, Caribbean, Latin America |
Typical HV Generator Applications
Mining Power Plants
Containerized 6.6kV or 11kV prime power for remote open-pit and underground mining operations — direct feed to mine distribution switchboard.
Data Centre Backup
HV standby generator sets for large Tier III–IV data centres with 11kV or 13.8kV distribution systems — eliminates UPS room transformer.
Grid Parallel & Substations
11kV or 13.8kV generator sets synchronising directly to utility grid — no inter-connecting transformer required at the grid interface.
Oil & Gas Facilities
6.6kV or 11kV prime power for offshore platforms, refineries and petrochemical plants with HV electrical distribution systems.
Heavy Industry
6.3kV or 10.5kV standby power for steel mills, cement plants and large manufacturing facilities with HV motor drives and equipment.
Rural Electrification
11kV prime power plants for rural electrification projects — HV output feeds directly into overhead line distribution without local transformer.
