What is a Power Factor Correction (PFC) Diesel Generator?
A power factor correction diesel generator integrates a pulse-width modulated voltage source converter (PWM-VSC) or DSTATCOM (Distribution Static Compensator) with the generator set. This solid-state compensator supplies the leading reactive power (kVAR) required by inductive loads, allowing the generator to operate at unity power factor.
Also known as capacitor compensated diesel generators or diesel generator sets with reactive power compensation, these units eliminate harmonics from source currents, provide load balancing, and improve voltage regulation. The result: full utilisation of generator rating without derating.

Why Power Factor Correction for Diesel Generators?
The economic and technical case for PFC diesel generator sets.
20–30% More Usable Capacity
Most inductive loads operate at 0.7–0.8 power factor, forcing generator derating of 20–30%. PFC allows full utilisation of generator rating – the compensator cost (typically 10% for >500kVA units) is recovered through increased capacity.
Harmonics Elimination
PWM-VSC compensator actively filters harmonics from source currents, preventing torque ripples on generator shaft, reducing fuel consumption, and extending generator life. Meets IEEE 519 standards.
Load Balancing & Voltage Regulation
Handles unbalanced and non-linear loads without degrading power quality. Compensator supplies reactive and harmonic components, improving voltage regulation at point of common coupling.
Solid-State Reactive Power Compensation
System Configuration
The PFC diesel generator consists of a diesel engine-driven wound field synchronous generator connected to a three-leg PWM-VSC with a DC-link capacitor. The VSC is connected at the point of common coupling through an interfacing transformer and inductors.
Control Algorithm
A variable step size filter-x least mean square (VSS-FXLMS) algorithm estimates reference currents for VSC control. This provides fast convergence and superior transient performance compared to conventional LMS-based controllers.
The VSC supplies leading kVAR to loads, maintaining unity power factor of the DG set while eliminating harmonics and providing load balancing. Terminal voltage is controlled by field excitation; frequency by engine speed governor.
Common Applications for PFC Generators
Ideal for loads with poor power factor, harmonics, or unbalanced conditions.
Telecom Base Stations
Telecom loads often include rectifiers and switching supplies – highly non-linear with poor power factor. PFC gensets ensure unity PF operation and harmonic compliance.
Data Centres
UPS systems and server loads create significant reactive power demand. PFC generators eliminate the need for oversizing, providing full rated capacity.
Industrial Plants
Motor-driven equipment (pumps, compressors, conveyors) typically operates at 0.7–0.8 PF. PFC allows full utilisation of generator rating without derating.
Hospitals & Healthcare
Critical medical equipment with switching power supplies creates harmonics. PFC ensures clean power and optimal generator performance.
Remote Mining
Large motor loads and variable operating conditions benefit from PFC's load balancing and voltage regulation capabilities.
Isolated Microgrids
Standalone systems with mixed load types require robust power quality – PFC generators provide unity PF operation and harmonic mitigation.
